David's new look!

I think I mentioned in the past that David's ophthalmologist continually told us that David did not need glasses, even though all of his therapists believed he needed glasses, his teachers believed he needed glasses, and I believed he needed glasses. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, I found a optometrist that would see David. And as it turns out, I was RIGHT! He DOES need glasses. Our new eye doctor says that David has an astigmatism and is nearsighted.

I was talking to the lady, and she said that David's vision is really pretty poor. She said she was amazed that the other eye doctor didn't give him glasses. His astigmatism was so bad that medicaid doesn't cover the full price of the lenses - I had to pay forty extra dollars out of pocket - twenty five for the lenses and fifteen because I chose metal frames.

Anyways, here are the pictures of David in his new glasses! How cute is this?

My last blog post I talked about how David had fallen and busted his head pretty hard. That was on Halloween, on a Friday. Well, Monday morning I was holding David's hand as we walked from the car to the school. From where I park, there's about half a block of graveled pavement to walk before we get to the school.

David tripped over a rock or something and fell, flat on his face, hitting his head especially hard, on the same spot as he fell a few days before.

Even thinking about the sound that it made as his head hit the pavement makes me want to vomit (think cantelope on sidewalk) - and he was bleeding everywhere. I ran inside and got paper towels, and went to the nurse's office where they gave him two bandages.

I'm hoping that with David's new glasses he won't fall as much. That was two days before pictures. So, his school pictures won't really be pretty, everyone was making fun of me for paying about $30 for pictures of him with a ginormous bruise on his forehead... but they're his first school pictures!!

I can't wait until we get them 36_1_1%5B1%5D.gif

Saturday night was the scariest night I've had with David in a while. I put him in bed at about eight, like normal, and he was asleep for a little while. Then he woke up and proceeded to have one of his middle-of-the-night fits that he's notorious for. Usually there's no consoling him - we just have to wait until he's done. I went in and checked on him after a little while and noticed he had pulled out his button. As I had him laid down on the bed to reinsert the button, I noticed what appeared to be a hernia sticking out of the middle of his abdomen, about an inch above his belly button. When he screamed, it would stick out further. I began to think that he was in pain because I couldn't get him to stop crying!
So with shaky hands, I changed his shirt and laid him on the couch while I put his shoes on, and went into the office to get his medicaid card - I was about to rush him to the emergency room!! But while he was laying on the couch he fell back asleep. I called my grandma and told her about it. She said it was something I should get checked out on Monday but it wasn't anything that warranted a midnight trip to the ER. Whew!
Here's a picture of him, laying on the couch asleep, after that incident. (It's crazy how flexible he is!)

I called the doctor on Monday and they had us come in on Tuesday to get the hernia checked out. Then they set up an appointment with the surgeon who did his mickey button/nissan to see what he thought. The surgeon said that David does have a hernia and it does need to be fixed surgically. He said it's not an emergency, but he wants to get it done soon, before it turns into a problem. So, we'll have surgery in January.

That's it for now... but keep your fingers crossed that we all recover from this respiratory crap soon - I had to keep David out of school twice this week due to running a fever!

Till next time 36_3_16%5B1%5D.gif

Hi!

What's the refraction power and the astigmatism no? Also how did you teach him to keep his glasses on. I have a 3 yr old (Fomer 23 weeker who needs to wear glasses. He looks pretty darn cute with those glasses?
